The reasons why the South is so Republican and Right Wing today, have to do with the Civil Rights legislation. From the 1960s and the Southern Caucus going from solid Democrat to solid Republican, with some exceptions. That President Johnson predicted would happen in the 1960s and Richard Nixon's Southern Strategy of 1968, 70 and 72, not only getting elected in 1968 but Congressional Republicans picking. Up seats in the House and Senate, in 1966, 68, 70 and 72, making the Republican Party players in Congress again. As well as President Nixon's landslide reelection in 1972, not because Southerners went from Liberal or Progressive in the early and mid 1960s, to Right Wing and in some case Far Right by the late 60s. As well as the Religious Right emerging in American Politics in the 1970s.
